Key Concepts

  • Electric current: and drift velocity
  • Ohm's law: resistivity and conductivity
  • Kirchhoff's laws: current law (KCL) and voltage law (KVL)
  • Bridges: Wheatstone bridge and metre bridge
  • Cells: EMF, internal resistance, terminal voltage

Important Formulas

Current: I = nqAv_d

Ohm's Law: V = IR; R = ρL/A

Kirchhoff's Laws: KCL: ΣI = 0 at junction; KVL: ΣV = 0 around loop

Power: P = I²R = V²/R = VI

Terminal Voltage: V_terminal = EMF − Ir

Solved Numerical Examples

Example 1

Question: A wire of resistance 5Ω carries a current of 2A for 10 min. Find heat generated.

Solution: Heat generated = I²Rt = 4×5×600 = 12000 J

Example 2

Question: In Wheatstone bridge: P/Q = R/S. If P=10Ω, Q=5Ω, R=20Ω, find S.

Solution: S = QR/P = 5×20/10 = 10Ω
