Key Concepts
- Faraday's laws: of electromagnetic induction
- Lenz's law: (conservation of energy)
- Motional EMF: concept and derivations
- Inductance: Self-inductance and mutual inductance
- Energy stored: in an inductor
Important Formulas
Induced EMF: EMF = -dφ/dt
Magnetic Flux: φ = NBAcosθ
Motional EMF: EMF = Blv
Self-Inductance: L = Nφ/I; Energy U = ½LI²
Mutual Inductance: M = Nφ₂/I₁
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Question: A coil of 100 turns, area 5×10⁻² m², B = 0.2 T. φ = NBAcosθ = 100×0.2×0.05×cos0° = 1 Wb. If B reverses in 0.01s, find EMF.
Solution: EMF = ΔNφ/Δt = 2/0.01 = 200 V
Example 2
Question: A rod of length 0.5m moves at 4m/s perpendicular to B = 0.2T. Find Motional EMF.
Solution: Motional EMF = Blv = 0.2×0.5×4 = 0.4 V
