- Types of waves: Types of waves: transverse and longitudinal
- Wave speed, frequency, wavelength relationship: Wave speed, frequency, wavelength relationship
- Superposition principle and interference: Superposition principle and interference
- Stationary waves and normal modes: Stationary waves and normal modes
- Doppler effect: Doppler effect
Important Formulas
Wave speed:
v = fλ
Speed of sound:
v = √(B/ρ) (Newton); v = √(γP/ρ) (Laplace)
Stationary wave length:
L = nλ/2 (string); L = (2n−1)λ/4 (closed pipe)
Doppler effect:
f' = f(v ± v_o)/(v ∓ v_s)
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Problem: A sound wave has a frequency of 200 Hz and a speed of 340 m/s in air. Find its wavelength.
Solution: Wavelength λ = v/f. λ = 340 / 200 = 1.7 m.
Example 2
Problem: An observer moves towards a stationary source of sound of frequency 500 Hz with a speed of 34 m/s. If the speed of sound is 340 m/s, what is the apparent frequency heard?
Solution: Using Doppler effect formula, f' = f(v + v_o)/v. f' = 500(340 + 34)/340 = 500(374/340) = 550 Hz.
