Important Formulas
Gravitational force:
F = Gm₁m₂/r²
Acceleration due to gravity:
g = GM/R²
Orbital velocity:
v_o = √(GM/r)
Escape velocity:
v_e = √(2GM/R) = √(2gR)
Kepler's third law:
T² ∝ r³
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Problem: Calculate the escape velocity from the surface of the Earth. (g = 9.8 m/s², R = 6400 km)
Solution: Escape velocity v_e = √(2gR). Here g = 9.8 m/s², R = 6400 × 10³ m. v_e = √(2 × 9.8 × 6.4 × 10^6) = √(125.44 × 10^6) ≈ 11.2 × 10³ m/s = 11.2 km/s.
Example 2
Problem: What is the force of gravitation between two bodies of mass 10 kg and 20 kg kept 2 m apart? (G = 6.67 × 10^-11 N·m²/kg²)
Solution: Force F = G m₁m₂/r². F = (6.67 × 10^-11 × 10 × 20) / 2² = (1334 × 10^-11) / 4 ≈ 3.33 × 10^-9 N.
