Key Concepts
- Huygens' principle: wavefronts and propagation
- Young's double slit experiment (YDSE): interference
- Interference: Conditions for constructive and destructive interference
- Diffraction: single slit diffraction pattern
- Polarisation: by reflection (Brewster's law), by scattering
Important Formulas
Fringe width: β = λD/d
Path difference (bright): Δx = nλ
Path difference (dark): Δx = (2n−1)λ/2
Single slit minima: a sinθ = nλ
Brewster's angle: tan iB = n
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Question: YDSE: d=1mm, D=1m, λ=600nm. Find Fringe width β.
Solution: β = λD/d = 600×10⁻⁹×1/10⁻³ = 0.6 mm
Example 2
Question: Light of λ=500nm falls on single slit of width 0.2mm. Find first minimum at θ.
Solution: sinθ = λ/a = 500×10⁻⁹/2×10⁻⁴ = 2.5×10⁻³, θ = 0.143°
