Key Concepts

  • Electric charge: properties (quantization, conservation, additivity)
  • Coulomb's law: force between point charges
  • Electric field: definition, field lines, superposition principle
  • Electric dipole: and electric dipole moment
  • Gauss's law: and its applications (sphere, infinite plane, cylinder)
  • Electric flux: definition and properties

Important Formulas

Coulomb's law: F = kq₁q₂/r² (k = 9×10⁹ N m²/C²)

Electric field: E = F/q₀ = kq/r² (due to point charge)

Electric dipole moment: p = q × 2a

Electric flux: φ = E·A·cosθ

Gauss's law: φ_total = q_enc/ε₀

Solved Numerical Examples

Example 1

Question: Two charges 4μC and 9μC are placed 30 cm apart. Find the force between them.

Solution: F = k q₁q₂/r² = 9×10⁹ × 4×10⁻⁶ × 9×10⁻⁶ / (0.3)² = 3.6 N

Example 2

Question: An electric dipole of moment p = 2×10⁻⁶ C·m is placed in a uniform electric field E = 5×10⁵ N/C at angle 30° to the field. Find the torque.

Solution: τ = pE sinθ = 2×10⁻⁶ × 5×10⁵ × sin30° = 0.5 N·m
