- Distance vs displacement: Distance vs displacement; speed vs velocity
- Uniform and non-uniform motion: Uniform and non-uniform motion
- Equations of motion (kinematic equations): Equations of motion (kinematic equations)
- Motion under gravity (free fall): Motion under gravity (free fall)
- Relative velocity in 1D: Relative velocity in 1D
Important Formulas
Velocity-time:
v = u + at
Position-time:
s = ut + ½at²
Velocity-position:
v² = u² + 2as
Distance in nth second:
s_n = u + a(2n−1)/2
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Problem: A car accelerates uniformly from rest to a speed of 72 km/h in 10 seconds. Find the distance covered by the car in this time.
Solution: Initial velocity u = 0. Final velocity v = 72 km/h = 20 m/s. Time t = 10 s. Acceleration a = (v - u)/t = (20 - 0)/10 = 2 m/s². Distance s = ut + ½at² = 0 + ½(2)(10)² = 100 m.
Example 2
Problem: A ball is dropped from a height of 80 m. How long does it take to reach the ground? (g = 10 m/s²)
Solution: Initial velocity u = 0. Displacement s = -80 m. Acceleration a = -10 m/s². Using s = ut + ½at², -80 = 0 + ½(-10)t², -80 = -5t², t² = 16. Therefore, time t = 4 s.
