Key Concepts

Important Formulas

Range:

R = u²sin2θ/g

Maximum height:

H = u²sin²θ/(2g)

Time of flight:

T = 2u sinθ/g

Centripetal acceleration:

a = v²/r = ω²r

Solved Numerical Examples

Example 1

Problem: A projectile is fired with an initial velocity of 20 m/s at an angle of 30° to the horizontal. Calculate its horizontal range. (g = 10 m/s²)

Solution: Range R = u²sin(2θ)/g. Here u = 20 m/s, θ = 30°, so 2θ = 60°. R = (20² × sin(60°)) / 10 = (400 × √3/2) / 10 = 20√3 ≈ 34.64 m.

Example 2

Problem: A stone of mass 0.5 kg tied to a string of length 2 m is whirled in a horizontal circle with a speed of 4 m/s. Find the centripetal acceleration.

Solution: Centripetal acceleration a = v²/r. Here v = 4 m/s and r = 2 m. Therefore, a = 4² / 2 = 16 / 2 = 8 m/s².
