Key Concepts
- Composition of nucleus: protons and neutrons
- Energy: Binding energy and mass defect
- Radioactivity: α, β, γ decay; laws of radioactive decay
- Life: Half-life and mean life
- Reactions: Nuclear fission and fusion
Important Formulas
Binding energy: BE = Δm × c² (Δm in u, 1u = 931.5 MeV)
Radioactive decay: N = N₀e^(−λt)
Half-life: T₁/₂ = 0.693/λ
Mean life: τ = 1/λ = T₁/₂/0.693
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Question: Half-life of a sample is 5 years. After 15 years, what fraction remains?
Solution: Fraction remaining = (1/2)^(15/5) = (1/2)³ = 1/8
Example 2
Question: ²⁶Fe⁵⁶ has mass defect Δm ≈ 0.52870 u. Find BE/nucleon.
Solution: BE = 0.52870×931.5 = 492.6 MeV. BE/nucleon = 492.6/56 = 8.79 MeV/nucleon
