Key Concepts
- Reflection & Refraction: Laws of reflection and refraction (Snell's law)
- Total internal reflection: and critical angle
- Prism: Refraction through prism; deviation and dispersion
- Lenses: thin lens formula, lens maker's equation
- Optical instruments: microscope, telescope
Important Formulas
Snell's law: n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂
Mirror/Lens formula: 1/f = 1/v + 1/u (mirror), 1/f = 1/v - 1/u (lens)
Lens maker's: 1/f = (n−1)(1/R₁ − 1/R₂)
Prism: n = sin((A+D)/2)/sin(A/2)
Critical angle: sinC = 1/n
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Question: Light goes from glass (n=1.5) to air. Find Critical angle.
Solution: sinC = 1/1.5, C = 41.8°
Example 2
Question: Convex lens f=20cm, object at 30cm in front. Find image position.
Solution: 1/v = 1/f + 1/u = 1/20 + 1/(-30) = (3-2)/60 = 1/60, v = 60cm. Image is real and beyond 2f.
