Key Concepts
- Atomic models: Thomson's and Rutherford's models of atom
- Rutherford's experiment: alpha-scattering experiment
- Bohr's model: postulates, energy levels, spectral series
- Hydrogen spectrum: Lyman, Balmer, Paschen, Brackett, Pfund series
Important Formulas
Bohr's radius: rₙ = n²a₀ (a₀ = 0.529 Å)
Energy of nth orbit: Eₙ = −13.6/n² eV
Rydberg formula: 1/λ = R(1/n₁² − 1/n₂²) (R = 1.097×10⁷ m⁻¹)
Frequency: f = (E₂ − E₁)/h
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Question: Find the wavelength of first line of Balmer series.
Solution: 1/λ = R(1/4 − 1/9) = 1.097×10⁷ × 5/36, λ = 656 nm
Example 2
Question: Energy of ground state of H = −13.6 eV; find first excited state and ionization energy.
Solution: first excited state = −13.6/4 = −3.4 eV; ionization energy = 13.6 eV
