Key Concepts
- Electric potential: definition, relation to field (E = -dV/dr)
- Potential due to: point charge, dipole, system of charges
- Equipotential surfaces: properties
- Capacitors: parallel plate, spherical, cylindrical
- Energy stored: in a capacitor; dielectrics and polarization
Important Formulas
Electric potential: V = kq/r
Electric field: E = -dV/dr
Capacitance: C = ε₀A/d (parallel plate)
Energy stored: Energy = Q²/2C = CV²/2 = QV/2
Combinations: Series: 1/C_eq = Σ(1/Cᵢ); Parallel: C_eq = ΣCᵢ
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Question: A parallel plate capacitor has plates of area 0.1 m² separated by 2 mm. Find capacitance.
Solution: C = ε₀A/d = 8.85×10⁻¹²×0.1/0.002 = 442.5 pF
Example 2
Question: Energy stored in 10μF capacitor charged to 100V?
Solution: E = ½CV² = ½×10×10⁻⁶×100² = 0.05 J
