Key Concepts
- Magnetic force: on a moving charge (Lorentz force)
- Biot-Savart law: and its applications
- Ampere's circuital law: applications
- Magnetic force: between parallel current-carrying conductors
- Devices: Cyclotron; moving coil galvanometer
Important Formulas
Lorentz force: F = qv × B
Magnetic field (circular loop): B (at centre) = μ₀I/2R
Magnetic field (straight wire): B (infinite straight wire) = μ₀I/2πr
Force between parallel wires: F/L = μ₀I₁I₂/2πd
Torque on current loop: τ = nBIA sinθ
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Question: A proton moves with v = 10⁶ m/s perpendicular to B = 0.5 T. Find force.
Solution: F = qvB = 1.6×10⁻¹⁹×10⁶×0.5 = 8×10⁻¹⁴ N
Example 2
Question: Current of 5A flows in a circular loop of radius 0.1m. Find B at centre.
Solution: B at centre = μ₀I/2R = 4π×10⁻⁷×5/(2×0.1) = 31.4 μT
