Key Concepts
- Magnets: Bar magnet and magnetic dipole
- Earth's magnetic field: declination, dip, horizontal component
- Magnetisation: and magnetic susceptibility
- Magnetic materials: Dia-, para-, ferromagnetic materials
- Hysteresis: and retentivity
Important Formulas
Magnetic Field: B = μ₀(H + M)
Susceptibility: χ = M/H
Relative permeability: μᵣ = 1 + χ
Magnetic moment: m = NIA
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Question: A bar magnet of moment 0.5 A·m² is placed in field B = 0.4 T. Find max torque.
Solution: Max torque = mB = 0.5×0.4 = 0.2 N·m
Example 2
Question: The horizontal component of Earth's field is 0.3×10⁻⁴ T and dip is 60°. Find total field B.
Solution: Total field B = H/cosδ = 0.3×10⁻⁴/cos60° = 0.6×10⁻⁴ T
