Key Concepts
- Maxwell's equations: and displacement current
- Nature of EM waves: transverse nature
- EM spectrum: γ-rays, X-rays, UV, visible, IR, microwave, radio
- Speed of EM waves: in vacuum: c = 1/√(μ₀ε₀)
- Properties: and uses of different EM waves
Important Formulas
Speed of Light: c = 3×10⁸ m/s = 1/√(μ₀ε₀)
E and B relation: E₀/B₀ = c
Intensity: I = ½ε₀E₀²c = cB₀²/2μ₀
Displacement current: I_d = ε₀ dφ_E/dt
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Question: EM wave has E₀ = 300 N/C. Find B₀.
Solution: B₀ = E₀/c = 300/(3×10⁸) = 10⁻⁶ T = 1 μT
Example 2
Question: Wavelength of visible light 500nm. Find Frequency.
Solution: f = c/λ = 3×10⁸/(500×10⁻⁹) = 6×10¹⁴ Hz
