Solved Numerical Examples

Example 1

Problem: A wire of length 2 m and cross-sectional area 10^-6 m² is stretched by a force of 100 N. If the wire elongates by 1 mm, calculate the Young's modulus of its material.

Solution: Stress = F/A = 100 / 10^-6 = 10^8 N/m². Strain = ΔL/L = (10^-3) / 2 = 5 × 10^-4. Young's modulus Y = Stress / Strain = 10^8 / (5 × 10^-4) = 2 × 10^11 N/m².

Example 2

Problem: Calculate the strain energy stored in the above wire.

Solution: Energy U = ½ × F × ΔL. U = ½ × 100 × (10^-3) = 0.05 J.
