Important Formulas
Ideal gas law:
PV = nRT
Average kinetic energy:
KE_avg = (3/2)kT per molecule
Root mean square speed:
v_rms = √(3RT/M)
Average speed:
v_avg = √(8RT/πM)
Most probable speed:
v_mp = √(2RT/M)
Solved Numerical Examples
Example 1
Problem: Calculate the rms speed of oxygen molecules at 300 K. (M = 32 g/mol, R = 8.314 J/mol·K)
Solution: v_rms = √(3RT/M). Here T = 300 K, M = 32 × 10^-3 kg/mol. v_rms = √( (3 × 8.314 × 300) / (32 × 10^-3) ) = √(7482.6 / 0.032) = √(233831) ≈ 483.56 m/s.
Example 2
Problem: Find the average translational kinetic energy of an ideal gas molecule at 27°C. (k = 1.38 × 10^-23 J/K)
Solution: Temperature T = 27 + 273 = 300 K. Average KE = (3/2)kT = 1.5 × 1.38 × 10^-23 × 300 = 6.21 × 10^-21 J.
